4 DECEMBER

0600	According to reports from the provinces 70 to 80 per cent of the sowing of
      the winter-corn has been done, yet only 30 to 40 per cent of the ploughing.

1005	According to NEPAKARAT in the past years the trade unions did not    represent the workers' interests. In this field the events of October 23 brought a radical change and the new leaders of the trade unions together with the
workers' councils fight for the interests of the workers.

	NEPAKARAT attacks Laszlo RETI, Director of the Institute of Labor-Movement.
	who, although compromising himself during the RAKOSI era, refuses to resign.

1015	Gyula USZTA, Major-General, President of the Military Council, gave an
	interview for NEPSZABADSAG. He said that a plan for the re-organization of
	the new army is under way. It will be considerably smaller than that of the past.

1020	According to NEPSZABADSAG the center of BUDAPEST is crowded with street
	vendors. The newspaper suggests that selling in the streets should be
	discontinued.

1030	Full text of the telegram sent by the Hungarian government to the Secretary General of the UN.

1400	According to a government decree pensions will again be paid out to those
	from whom it was illegally withdrawn in the past. The maximum amount is
	400 forint per month.

1410	The Executive Committee of the BUDAPEST Council re-named the streets and
	squares in the capital bearing the name of STALIN.

1500	Lectures at the BUDAPEST Technical Highschool will be resumed on January
	7 1957.

1700	Report on the December 3 evening session of UN in connection with the
	Hungarian question. The Rumanian Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that Imre NAGY and his companions received asylum in Rumania.

1933	In BUDAPEST factories, production is still hindered by power shortage.

1940	During the past few days hoarding of bread started again because rumors
	had it that the bakers were going on strike.

2010	According to a government decree, signed by Ferenc MUNNICH, the revolutionary committees and their central organ will be dissolved immediately.

	This measure was necessary because the revolutionary committees hindered
	the work of official bodies.

2020	At 1200 hours on December 4 a group of several hundred women laid flowers in front of the war memorial. The orderly demonstration was not disturbed.

2025	Fresh leaflets were distributed in BUDAPEST which call upon the people to
	demonstrate on December 6.

2210	This afternoon representatives of Hungarian intellectuals discussed the
	setting up of art and press committees. Those present protested
	that certain provincial authorities intend to prevent provincial theaters
	from performing 'Bank ban' (Hungarian patriotic drama.)
