Research) THE JEWISH CHURCH IN HUNGARY -- ADDENDUM TO BACKGROUND REPORT OF SEPT 12, After their resolution supporting the KADAR Government, the Hungarian Jews undertook to take part in the work of the Patriotic People's Front. The Hungarian Jews find their place within the Patriotic People's Front...We found the way by which we can at the same time be good Hungarians and loyal to our Jewish faith. ("Uj Elet", September 1957) The Hungarian Jews' joined the campaign against the UN five-member committee's report, and the presidium of the Hungarian Israeli National Representation, together with the Bench of Rabbis, issued the following statement in the name of the Hungarian Jews: We are concerned over the fact that the UN has called together an extraordinary session for September 10 for the discussion of the so-called Hungarian question... The Hungarian Jews hold the discussion of the Hungarian question to be inappropriate. This discussion does not serve either the Hungarian people or the cause of peace. ("Uj Slet", September 1957) Between 23-25 August 1957, the leaders of the Hungarian Jews started negotiations in ZURICH with the presidium of the Jewish World Congress. As a result, the Hungarian Israeli National Representation joined the Jewish World Congress and thus connections between the Hungarian Jewish community and the Jews of the world were re-established. According to the agreement, the Hungarian Committee of the Jewish world Congress will be elected in the presence of foreign observers. Hungarian Jews will take part in the Executive Council of the Jewish World Congress and will have the right to express their opinion freely even if it differs from the majority. ("Uj Elet" September 1957) End
