INTERESTING CHANGES IN DIRECTION OF TWO HUNGARIAN

PUBLICATIONS

MUNICH, February 24 -- (Hungarian Evaluation & Research
-- A new member joined the editorial board of the People's
Patriotic Front daily "Magyar Nemzet" on February 1 -- General
Béla Szekely, chief of staff from spring 1954 to 22 February
1955.

He was always considered a political nominee during
his military career. After his dismissal he disappeared for
some time from the political arena, remaining only an ordinary
member of Parliament.

A short time after the crushing of the revolution he
reappeared in January 1957 as an article writer in the Party
daily "Nepszabadsag". During 1957 he delivered speeches at PPF
meetings and other occasions, dealing mostly with events connect
with his constituency situated in county of Szabolcs-Szatmár.

Since he is believed to be a rather tough Party man,
there is no doubt that his nomination involves the strengthening
of the Party's influence over the editorial board of "Magyar
Nemzet". This is even more likely as he took the place of Jeno
Revesz, a diehard Party member who was transferred to "Esti
Hirlat" as managing editor.

The second change affects the weekly "Pastas", organ
of the Pioneer youth movement. The responsible editor of that
paper, Eva Szirmai, has been replaced by Gabriella Cshohany a
well-known Communist journalist. Miss Csohany used to be editor
of the childrens program of the Hungarian Radio before the 1956
revolution, but during the revolt the was dismissed and
reprimanded for her political attitude. She is a militant member of
the Women's Organization and recently came into the limelight
with an article on the necessity of stepping up atheist
propaganda.

End.
